In regards to sand, please be wary of the abrasive nature of sand and also stay clear of salt water with your device.

Yes im sure sand is abrasive but if the phone is dust proof does that mean that it is also sandproof.  i.e. If I take pictures with my phone in a sandy windy desert will the sand get in, or can I be sure that the phone is proteceted? as it would appear in the marketing of the Z1 that it should be sandproof

Provided all of the ports remain closed then you will not get sand in the device, however I again caution against using it in this environment due to the potential damage to the handset due to scratching of the body/camera lens.
