Big daddy resolved it

You have to sacrifice resetting the phone using the Sony PC software 1st. Avoid data backup from old accounts.

Then, after the reboot is done and Android is reinstalled with update x.x.x.534 goto the dialer & type *#*#7378423#*#* then press dial

In the menu that will come go to calibration and then choose proximity sensor. (If you run the test it might give error = -1) Then, set settings to default and it may ask to reboot the device.

After reboot type *#*#7378423#*#* then press dial. In the menu that will come go to calibration and then choose proximity sensor do the test and it will show success. VIOLAAAaaaa!!!!

Check the phone...it works

Have tested this and the issue is resolved on my phone finally ....yippieeeeeee!!!

My phone shuts off the proximity sensor when I pinch the top left corner, it sounds like the fix on this thread (which is hardware not software related) sounds plausible:

Proximity sensor on my xperia z5 shows always "On" and turns off only when I press upper right corner of the phone. When I type *#*#7378423#*#* I don't have calibration option, what can I do. Any suggestions?

Positioning the tape is touchy, but I was able to restore normal operation on my Z5 Compact.

This method (or a spot of nail polish) could also be used to simply disable the proximity sensor without any other hardware or software hacks.

On my Xperia Z3, proximity sensor was always on (after fixing SIM reader issue). Removed rear cover. Loosened screw at the WLAN antena (it's the one above the USB port looking from the back of the phone) and applied and relesed pressure on the WLAN antenna by hand while checking the sensor in service mode until it worked properly. In the same time, also played with the screw by loosening and tightening it.

For me the proximity sensor problem appeared after I replaced my broken LCD. 

I tried various methods, but could not recalibrate the sensitivity.

I took the phone apart, removed the motherboard, plied up the proximity sensor. I found that the new screen had a tint above the proximity sensor. 

I used a very small flat screwdriver to remove the color from the front glass from "behind", through the proximity sensor's hole. 

This has fixed my issue, but I know it's not a simple solution. 

It would be much more simple to recalibrate the sensor...
