I have tried and tried but can't get my phone to update via PC Companion. I get stuck at the "prepare (part 2) part of the update where I am told to disconnect my phone from the PC and then turn it off, wait 5 secs, then reconnect phone to PC. Problem is, the phone is already turned off when I disconnect it during the part 2 (prepare) phase. Driving me mad!

Problem has gone away! Phone updated and operating ok. I cannot explain this but I went through the entire process again and this time the screen instruction to uncouple my phone, wait 5 secs and then power on holding the volume down button simply didn't appear and it went through to a screen which simply instructed me to uncouple the phone and switch it on. Job done! Inexplicable!!!!
Make sure the device is turned off when you are told to connect with volume down. Also, your device has to be charged to at least 60%.
Like I said, the phone is already turned off by PC companion during the "prepare"phase and I have followed the instructions to the letter. So, should I switch the phone back on when disconnecting it from the PC/Laptop so that I can switch it off myself as per the instruction? When pressing the volume down button the instructions require that I press the power on button at the same time; this switches the phone back on again. Is this what is supposed to happen? I have gone this far many times but then, nothing other than a pop up asking me if I'm having trouble! The answer to that is Yes, I am!

Cool.
Hello there,
these steps might solve the problem (make your backups first before doing anything)
1) Uninstall PC Companion
2) Install again from fresh installer (download again Sony PC Companion_Web from Sony's web page)
3) Restart your PC even if this is not necessary
4) Charge your phone @ 100% (yes 100%)
5) There are two ways to repair using PC Companion.
a) You can have your phone connected from the begining of restoration ( start PC Companion go to Support Zone Start button , Phone / Tablet Software Update Start button , repair my phone / tablet)
b) disconnect your phone from the computer , start PC Companion go to Support Zone Start button , Phone / Tablet Software Update Start button , repair my phone / tablet. From the list with the devices click your device and follow the instructions.
p.s
When you connect your phone , does PC Companion recognise your device ?
Then the problem is with your computer , I am glad you solved your problem.
