The automatic search for duplicates and suggestion for link candidates has been changes in the new Contacts app in Android 7 (Nougat). You can still link contacts manually by going to Contacts > Press and hold a contact to mark it > tap the contact you wish to link it with > Menu (3 dots in the top right) > Link.
If you happen to have your contacts synchronized towards an Online service such as Google, then you can use Googles automatic feature for linking contacts. Go to https://contacts.google.com/, then you can find a tab to the left called "Duplicates", here you may choose to "Merge all" if you want to merge all duplicates, or manually go through and merge the duplicates available.
