Contacts stock app crashes

Hi there,

Since I updated to marshmallow, my contact app crashes as soon as I start searching / typing a single letter.

I already tried cleaning the cache, force stop and even system repair. The contacts app works fine for 2 or 3 days, then the same problem appears.

If I start the phone in safe mode, the app works fine and this also lasts for 2-4 days (in normal mode).

I already thought, it might conclude with the missing sync feature of the present facebook android app, because facebook disabled connection / sync with 3rd party apps.

Anyone facing the same problem?

Hi @Speedy1981,

Welcome to the community.

If the issue does not persist in safe mode then it will be some conflict with a third party application. It could be Facebook as you suggest. The only way to be sure would be to start uninstalling apps one at a time and testing after each one.

I think, the problem is a bit more complicated.

The crash is caused by an error in the smart dial / smart search feature in the contacts stock app. Every third party contacts app works fine.
Once in a while, contact app freezes shortly and shows "searching on server". Which server ist meant here?

The Z5 also has an integrated facebook-component. Could it be, this app also has no more access to facebook services, since facebook closed that interface?

What I mean, is that the intelligent search feature in stock contacts app tries to search in all sources and accounts on my phone, causing an unknown error.

I already reduced accounts to local contacts: no difference. The problem doesn't appear on my wife's phone, her Z5 compact is still on lollipop.

Nice idea, but I can't keep my smartphone in safe mode for 2-4 days, because my main communication channels are WhatsApp or threema and they don't work in safe mode. It's my business smartphone.

After booting in safe mode, the problem is fixed. It also works fine again, booting in normal mode after that... for 2-4 days.

I'm having the same issue. The issue started once I'd upgraded to Marshmallow. I can search using the Sony Contacts app but cannot edit, as soon as I edit it crashes. The Google Contacts app is worse, as soon as I type a character it crashes. Therefore cannot add or edit any contacts on my Android handset using Google Contacts.

I'm sorry to hear that

It might be a 3:rd party app that's synchronizing contacts and is not working as it should. Go to Settings -> Accounts and see what accounts you have there and which that has the option to synchronize contacts. Try removing these and see if that helps.

Please let me know:
which apps are you using, that sync contacts?
Take a look at contacts --> settings --> accounts.
Do you use threema, by the way?

I'm having the same issue after updating my z5 to 32.2.A.0.224. Anyone know who to fix it without doing a factory reset?
