Camera lens film protection?

Hello,

I don't know if this is a normal film protection and I should remove it or if it is a manufacturing defect. Please see attached photo of my Z2 lens. Do you have some advice?

So you have completely removed the coating and the scratch is on the bare glass?. Does this affect your image quality?. If so just clean your lens with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, dampened with either pure water or body spray. As body spray is volatile, it evaporates easily without leaving any mess. Make sure your microfiber cloth doesn't have any dust particles in it which might scratch your lens further. Clean the lens without applying much pressure. After the lens gets dried, apply a clear scotch tape over the lens. I have seen in some other forums that image quality degradation due to scratches can be significantly reduced by applying a clear scotch tape as it fills the scratch and also it prevents further scratches. Also if you like using a protective case, please do so.

Fortunately, no.

"Does this affect your image quality?"

I'm not sure but I think it's good. All I'm worried about is the scratch.

I tried water, made sure that the microfiber cloth is clean, but it didn't work Slightly_frowning_Face

I'm not sure about the body spray thing, I don't want to make things even worse like I did when I tried the toothpaste (you were right about the granular particles part by the way). I actually tried different toothpastes before the scratch got more visible, the last one had those particles but they were very tiny.

P.S. You might want to know that my phone is still under warranty, but I currently don't live in the country where I bought it from.

Can you see a violet tint (UV coating) on your camera lens glass. I am asking this because I couldn't find that violet color on the image you have posted before(might be due to the overexposed image). I think you have removed the coating by rubbing with toothpaste. Anyway don't worry about that. Being too much sceptical about small problems can lead to more problems. This is what I learned from my experience. When my Xperia M2 was new, there was a UV coating and found a small hairline scratch on it. Being too much concerned about the problem, me too tried the toothpaste trick by reading various forums, which eventually rubbed away the UV coating. A small unimportant hairline scratch led to a 'no coating at all' lens. Then I have cleaned my lens with perfume spray on microfiber cloth and applied a scotch tape over it. Scotch tape prevents further scratches. I had no problems using a perfume spray on my M2 .It's your choice to use the spray or not. I am just sharing my experience. My camera takes good pictures (with and without the UV coating). If you like using protective cases, please use it. Otherwise your lens get scratched further as you place it somewhere with lens down.

Google : scotch tape on mobile camera lens.

You might get some useful information.

I have had 2 z3 compacts and both have done this. It looks awful but seems to take perfect photos. it is not scratches, it looks like a coating of some kind that has gone wrong and is getting worse.
What is the official verdict on this? Is it faulty or is polishing this coating off a good idea?

I can tell you.. Here is only one solution if you have problem with your lens.. You must change back cover. Yes it's cost bla bla bla.. If your lens broken you must do it and that is all.

Your suggestion helped... Replacing back cover is too expensive. Sony should use sapphire glass on camera to add more value to such an awesome camera!
