Battery Drain after update to Android 5.1.1

After the update to firmware 14.6.A.0.368 my battery lasts 15 hours instead of 2 to 3 days like before.

I had a similar problem when I switched from 4.4 to 5.0.2 but at that time a factory reset fixed all the problems. So i tried to do the same this time. And at first I worked well and the battery life was back to normal. But after two days the problem reoccurred. So I repaired the phone via Sony PC Companion and that did the trick. But just until I turned my phone on and off and then I was experiencing the same battery drain again.

On "battery usage" screen I see that all apps keep the mobile broadband connection active for a long time, even longer than they actually use CPU time. So there seems to be a problem with the modem. I switched my modem settings to "GSM only" and now the battery drain is reduced. That works for the moment but that's certainly not a solution I want to live with in the long run.

I would be very grateful for advice to get rid of the problem

EDIT:

I downgraded to 5.0.2 and everythin works fine again. You can find the instructions to do so here: http://xperiafirmware.com

Mods will tell you to repair via PC Companion, SONY will not respond at all. The only solution seems to be to have the battery replaced.

alex_ncfc:

I started this thread with the same problem that you described and for me it had nothing to do with a defect battery but it is a software issue as described here: Issue 165558: "Mobile radio active" battery drain in all internet apps

I could solve the problem by reverting back to Android 5.0.2 and now everything works fine again. At the start of this thread you will find a link how you can do that without rooting your device.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't think my battery needs replacing at all as I was on KitKat 4 days ago when it was fine (and had been all along) and then I install Lollipop and suddenly it's dreadful. So definitely not a replacement battery needed.

I would downgrade to 5.0.2 Andi but I remember trying that build back in May 2015 when it was first releases and it was dreadful and buggy. I went back to KitKat then by flashing it, but I finally decided to install 5.1 because of the updated security of the OS etc and I really like everything EXCEPT the fact that the battery drain is bordering on a farce. Smartphones have always been bad enough with battery as it is, but losing 10% here and there when you've done nothing takes.

If Sony won't respond, why are the forum admins not doing their jobs properly and forwarding this feedback to the developers??

Maybe they are but Z1C is already old phone. Just check the problems the owners of Z5 and Z5C are having. No wonder there is no menpower to create stabile OS versions for the already obsolete models 😞

It might well be an old phone, I agree.

But:

a) Many of us are locked into two year contracts with our phones and only got this phone in 2014 when it came out so still have it

and

b) The phone might be old, but the update is recent (the end of 2015) - if the update has a bug meaning I can only get a few hours out of my phone on Lollipop and a whole day on KitKat, then surely that must ring alarm bells and suggest that they need to fix it?

This is a user based forum, you can contact your Local support to get your device inspected, don't assume that there's a plot to ignore users, I don't understand why haven't you stopped by your Local support, to each its own but don't spread opinions as facts, thank you.

My local support is 300 km far away and I do not want to take any chances. The battery is warrantied only for 6 months here and if it gets damaged by any of the updates I will have to pay for it (to have it replaced). And by reading this forum I am really not convinced that SONY would not damage my phone even more - especially if I read the same storries over and over also about the latest phones.

@uliwooly

Not wishing to sound rude but what benefit would contacting some form of local support have for a clear software issue? What are they going to do? Trot out the old "Have you tried a factory reset?" and then do it for you? A factory reset cannot fix a bug that is so evidentely present in the 5.1 update provided by Sony. Therefore Sony should pull their fingers out and fix the  issue!

@alex_ncfc

To narrow down the issue, hence my suggestion

How do I find my "Local support"?

The link to Local Support says "need a repair?" but there is nothing available on there to find anywhere.

I've contacted Sony Support to ask more about this - unbelievably I've just been told there are no other reported issues with battery life on Lollipop. Do they never read their user forums?
