XZ1 Compact, apps cannot read or write to SD card after latest update.

My Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact updated 2 days ago and now apps cannot access the SD card properly. Build version 47.2.A.10.107. Some apps can read old data, but have problems reading some of it. No apps can write to the SD card. I have ejected the card and re inserted it. I have rebooted the phone. Still doesn't work!

Assuming that the apps have been granted the right to write to the SD card (try to regrant the rights in Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> See all 43 Apps -> Your App -> Permissions

On the right upper corner touch the three dots and choose "All Permissions". See it the SD-Card permissions exist (if so, it doesn't meant that they work). If so then your app is SD-Card capable.

Now the problem: assuming that the first time you tried to access SD-Card you were asked whether to allow this or not and you chose no or didn't notice - then you don't have this access. Try to reset app permissions by switching storage off and on again. If this doesn't work then maybe re-install app.

If this doesn't work then:

Do other cards work?

- if so then you should either re-format card or "repair" it.

- if not then most probably the only solution is to repair firmware with XPeria companion.

Hi, sorry, I should have said I have checked the permissions and turned them off and on and also reinstalled apps. The thing is, is that it is more than one app! I'll try another SD card. I just bought a new one and will try that when it is delivered.

Thanks

Ok, so my new SD card works fine. Really annoyed now though as my old card had loads of stuff on it! Thanks for the help. I'm also a bit peeved that I could not format the card as internal storage! Come on Sony, what's the problem with that? Useless without the extra space. I've had to delete a load of apps. Not happy. I'm guessing this is to get me to upgrade to a new handset. Gutted.

Your problems sounds somewhat similar to my case, an update triggered SD card file deletion / corruption (see /t5/Xperia-XZ1-Compact/SD-card-wiped-out-after-latest-update-recognized-ok-but-no-files/m-p/1386675/... ). If it's really the case, it's a MAJOR bug in Sony's customized Android.

Just to narrow down if the problem is similar, do you still have your old SD card, can you attach it to a computer with an SD card reader? Do you have loads of "files" and "cache" subfolders within e.g. DCIM and other directories? Even though deleted from the SD card I was able to rescue loads of photos from the card using Photorec (https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec ). Unfortunately it cannot restore the original file names, but the content should be accessible as long as no other app has written over the space on the card. You might have success as well.

Try using the data recovery program FILERECOVERY. It will recover original file names.

As I'm new to the community, not posting any links yet. Please just Google "FILERECOVERY". The all-caps is the program's name. Available for both Windows or Mac OS's.

I have exact same problem however I don't know if it has worked for me before even.

About the permission setting on the app, I believe the ones writing, it's the storage permission? I been trying reformat my Samsung 32gb EVO card several times now.. it doesn't make difference. Same with my Sandisk Ultra 64gb micro SDXC.

And on the "All permission" it is the one that says "modify/delete content on the SD card" and "read the contents of your SD card" that I shall see for available transfer to SD card? Because I cannot find any other in all the apps I been viewing. Been trying the app App2SD as well and those apps I trying transfer shows up there as available for transfer. But never seen the "move" button in the storage under the app settings.

Before I found this thread I read regarding Sony had totally abandon the function to transfer to SD card because of reason that apps runs slow in SD card no matter what and for no person to blame them for slow apps or so..

Either way, I may end up formatting my phone later today anyway and trying again then after that, as I'm running out of space.
