Won't install update

Has anyone had a problem installing the current Android update.
My phone gets halfway then reboots and says unable to install update.
Any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm very sorry about the late reply and for the inconvenience this has caused. I have now received new information about this.

You might experience the following when trying to update your device to Android™ 7.0 (Nougat):

  • If you try to update OTA, your device may restart after downloading the update. After the restart, you may get an error message saying that the update could not be installed.
  • If you try to update the device using Xperia™ Companion, you may receive the error message kResultCode_DeltaUpdateResultDidReturnFail

This is due to the fact that Google™ checks the OTA software availability on the Google™ server (not the SOMC FOTA server) during shutdown. Since no new software can be detected (because Xperia™ is using the SOMC FOTA server) the GMS deletes the update command. We have asked Google™ to register our product on the Google™ server to avoid this.

A software update has been released to fix this.

Note! Software rollouts are a phased process - timings & availability may vary by market/carrier.

Are you using XC?

What was the result of XC?

I have a similar situation with my Xperia XZ.

The current software version is 39.0.A.1.250 and I am notified for the 39.0.A.3.30 update.

The installation of the update fails no matter if I initiate the update from the phone itself or from XC.

It goes like this:

1. 88.2MB are downloaded

2. I click to install now and the phone restarts.

3. Verifying sytem update goes for about 50% of the progress bar.

4. The phone restarts

5. I am notified that the installation of the update failed.

If I use XC to perform the update I also get kResultCode_DeltaUpdateResultDidReturnFail when I reconnect the phone to the PC (which I suppose it's not very a specific error).

There is plenty of internal storage space and I have no problems with my Internet connection.

I have also cleared the cache of the software update app. My carrier is Vodafone RO.

Hi @HorneM, sorry to hear that you haven't been able to update your device.

I recommend that you restart both your PC and your phone, then try to perform the update again. If you happen to have another USB cable I also recommend that you try using that one when connecting your phone to the PC.

Let me know if you still get the same error message.

Hi Christofer,

Thanks for your answer. The update failure to install is not related to PC or cable.

The installation also fails when I install it from the phone using wifi. It fails exactly the same way (half way thru the verifying process) so there must be a deeper reason for this. I tried many times, after restarting the phone and after removing the SIM and the micro SD card. Maybe the file is corrupt or it's not compatible with the carrier, who can tell?

Isn't there a way to collect some useful information to diagnose what happens? I mean a simple message that the update failed to install is kind of duh and not helpful at all.

Is Android so limited that it can't provide a specific reason for an update failing to install?

@HorneM If you can send me your phone's IMEI in a PM I can forward this internally for investigation.
