Well, needless to say I am very upset! Here I am trying to defend this phone and when I got off the bus coming home from work today I find that during the 1/2 hour ride the phone completely reset itself while in my pocket! I LOST EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!
I have NEVER had any phone do this by itself. I do not know if I can live with a phone that does this.

I have no idea what is going on here but this is very scary!!!!
After removing the SIM to put it in my backup phone (ZTE Axon 7) and rebooting a couple of times...everything came back?????
Not too sure what happened or what is going on but this is something that concerns me greatly as I depend on this thing for more than just communication. Good thing I have an emergency phone. I recommend that everyone have a 2nd working phone just in case. Rant over for now!!!

I am really sorry to hear about this scare @StanleyKubrick but I am glad it is resolved. It's very strange indeed, but I am not sure what could have caused it.
All I can suggest for everyone is make sure you keep regular backups. You can set your device to perform automatic backups in the Backup & reset option of the settings menu. I recommend the Google sync options under Account settings also.
You are not alone. I have XZ = P. It did a factory reset last night. - Completley missing Password protection as well. I to reset again, because it did not recognise my password ??
What is happening SONY. otherwise brilliant phone.
Same thing happened to me on my Xperia XA2. Phoen just reset itself to factory settigs. Somewhere else I read how another person solved the issue. S/he took out the sim card and put it into another working phone ; turned it on. Then s/he reinserted the sim card into the orginal (Sony) phone and - voila - for some strange reason - everything was restored to the prior state. WORKED FOR ME TOO!
