Hi everyone,
I have been having a problem with my Xperia XZ's speakers when using the phone in speakerphone mode. I can't provide a precise date as to when this issue first occurred, but the last major update to my phone was to Android 7.1.1 I think in June; the problem seems to have coincided with this.
Whenever I use a calling app (whether it's WhatsApp or the stock phone app) to make a call and then put the call into speakerphone mode, sound only comes out of one speaker (the bottom one). This is not a problem I had in the past and is resulting in the very tinny, almost inaudible sound during calls on loudspeaker.
I have ubinstalled the apps in question as well as running diagnostics and restoring my phone to factory settings, all to no avail.
Has this issue happened to anyone else? How did you solve it?

I got more information about this and the reason that the top speaker is not being used for speaker phone is to reduce the risk of echo.
Hi @MoCrack94, Welcome to the community. I am sorry to hear about this
When you did the diagnostics test, did it make a sound?
You may wish to try a software repair using Xperia Companion and if that does not work, contact your Local support to arrange a repair assessment.
Hasn't this always been the case? I've never had both speakers working when on speakerphone.

Thank you for your reply.
I should have mentioned that the speaker works absolutely fine otherwise, including when playing media. The diagnostics tool found no problem.
I tried to fix the software in Companion, but this did nothing to fix it. I feel it may be a firmware issue related to the 7.1.1 update.
I will have to contact Sony directly for this one.

Well I wondered this too. The thing is, the sound quality has become so bad very recently when making calls on loudspeaker. It can't be an issue with the speakers, as media playback quality is unchanged.
It's a shame really. The loudspeaker quality is far better on my partner's iPhone.
Knowing that it's not a bug, but a feature that only one speaker is used for the speakerphone, I have reached the conclusion that Sony is not selling mobile phones as XZs, but pocket internet terminals. Having this thread: /t5/Xperia-XZ/Only-one-speaker-working-on-speakerphone/m-p/1258794#M10648 listed as "solved" is really poor form.
I was very thrilled to get rid of my iphone, but did not realise that nobody else, not even the SOUND companies like Sony, gives a toss about the quality of audio output.
I will be looking to make a service call on Monday to get this handset replaced. If they do right by me, great. If not, I will be looking to warn people from wasting their money.
And this Support Forum appears to be pretty worthless except as a way for us to validate that these devices have significant problems that Sony considers to be features, not bugs. Sorry, Sony. Fail.
