On the last two phones I had I could select a contact and specify a particular ringtone for calls from that contact and a different ringtone for texts from the contact.
In the XZ1C all I can do is set a ringtone. I don't know if it is for calls, texts, or both. Also it is very cumbersome. I can select a ringtone but after that I can't see what the ringtone is. On the other phones I could edit the contact and see what the call and text ringtones were.
If the XZ1C doesn't do that "out of the box" are there any other apps that do that? And, of course will they work with "OK Google" or will OK Google use the installed app only?
Thanks In Advance
Pete
Solved! Go to Solution.
I don't know what is happening but I have replied to this thread twice yesterday and both times it was visible at first but "went away" later.
If they return or if you refer to my post about how to have different ringtones for calls and text messages, I was wrong!
You can change the ringtone for a contact but that ringtone will be used for both calls and text messages.
I consider this to be a fatal flaw. If I cannot find a solution I will be returning this phone!
I have been using separate ringtones for calls and text messages with my two previous android phones and even my old flip phones. This is a major factor to me.
For calls...
Click on the contact in the Phone menu > select menu (the 3 dots top right of the contact pic) > select Set ringtone (then choose the ringtone you wnat to use) > Done. If you want to check it after to see what is set just follow the above steps again and it'll show the currennt ring tone assigned.
Messages, I couldn't find a way of doing that.
Yep, I have done that. But I can't really "check" my work. I basically have to go in like I'm selecting a "new" ringtone and then select the one I want and hope my fumble fingers don't tap the wrong one.
When you go back in the ringtone you selected previously will now show as set - I'm not too sure what else you would need here?
It depends on which app I use to select the ringtone. I used Total Commander. If I use Sound Picker or Media Storage I see what you mean.
I have been using Total Commander for years and have grown to like and trust it's versitility.
I am now exploring apps that allow different tones for each contact (I hope).
I think I have found the solution to my problems.
Ringtones for calls are set in the Contacts app while ringtones for notifications are set in the Messages app.
For call ringtones:
Contacts, select a contact, three dots, Set ringtone. I get three choices.
Sound Picker, Media Storage, and Total Commander. The first two are good because they show the current selection. But I have ringtones in other folders and they can't seem to find those folders.
Total Commander, a generic file explorer, can be pointed anywhere but it doesn't show the current selection.
For Notifications (texts I assume) :
Messages, select a contact, three dots, People & Options, Notifications, Sound.
Then I get the same three apps for selecting the ringtone.
Note, I have not been able to test this with real calls and texts. I got a new phone a few days ago and have been trying to get it set up like the one I am replacing. I just went to switch the SIM to the new phone and discovered the old phone used a Nano SIM and of course the XZ1C uses a Micro SIM so I have to go over to Target and get a new SIM.
Hi @PeteCal
You could have found the answer in the first place in the userguide. :smileysmileywink:
Well, I couldn't find what I needed in the user's guide. With the two previous android phones I had I could open a contact and could specify a ringtone for calls and a ringtone for text messages.
When I open a contact in this phone, all I can specify is a ringtone for calls.
I downloaded the pdf manual and searched for "text". Nothing about ringtones for text messages. I discovered that this phone adds another step to the text message process. When a message comes in it requires a "notification" in order to play a tune.
I searched the pdf manual for "notifications" and I could not find instructions for setting a notification tone for each contact separately.
But I stumbled on the fact that I could open a text message that came in from a contact and then I could "three dots", People & options, Notifications, Sound, and then pick a tone.
What a convoluted path to what was simple in my previous android phones. Who ever came up with this torture needs to get a refresher course in human factors.
I have had this phone for 4 or 5 days and have spent my time tailoring it for my needs. Finally, two days ago I was ready to switch the SIM card from my old (cracked screen) phone and I discovered the SIM card was the wrong size. I just got another SIM card and can start testing the items that need a cellphone plan.
I still need to do more experimenting with this but right now I can't get MMS messages. My provider is "working it".
To be continued.
