Best way to put 4K video on the TV?

Hi,

What's the best way to play 4K videos from my XZ1 Compact on my television?  I do not want to upload to YouTube and I want to avoid transfering to a middle-man USB stick

Weirdly, Sony PlayMemories Online does not appear to support 4K videos, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

If anyone cares the TV is a XBR65X900B

Thanks

Sevdar,

Thanks for the suggestion, could you elaborate a little on how the streaming works? Would I need to run a special app?  To confirm, this would not require uploading to YouTube, is that correct?

With the TV itself I can successfully "Miracast" but that does not seem to support 4K.

I also have connected to the TV...are you ready?  A Sony PS3, a PS4, a WiiU, a Nintendo Switch, a little PS TV box (long story), a XBox One, a QNAP (but the 4K output is flaky, too long of a HDMI run), oh and Sony's FMP-X1 4K media server that they have discontinued service for (why?! it was the best source and quality for 4K movies!! so sad)

So as you can see I am super reluctant to add another device, but please talk to me, how does the chromecast 4k streaming work with the XZ1?

Its very easy

Just plug the device to the HDMI of your tv

Set up it once to connect to internet

Then open the gallery app on your phone , start the video and press the button on the upper left on your screen...near the three dots

Thanks Sevdar, you do make it sound pretty easy!

Dumb question but is there an app that provides the same functionality via software. For example, with the YouTube app I can pick a video on the phone and play it on the TV's YouTube app (or e.g., the XBox One S YouTube app).  Is there a Google app that functions similarly so that the physical chromecast ultra hardware is not necessary?  (maybe even the youtube app itself??)

I transfer to my PC (windows 10), right click the video and there is a cast to device option. It casts 4k to the tv whitout lags and stuters.

Xz1c, is that option you are referring to for "Chrome-cast" or "Mira-cast" ?

If chromecast, are you using the chromecast dongle we were discussing above, are you using an app, or using the built-in functionality of an android tv?

Thanks for your input!  (no pun intended)

I am using built in functionality of windows 10 on my pc. The android 4k tv is conected to the same router as the PC. So as i said i just right click the video or picture and there is "cast to device" option, there the tv shows up and you cast 4k.. No dongles or apps required.

Edit: Tv is conected via Wi-Fi and PC via cable. Having said that I just made a test to see what upload speed the pc  reaches while casting 4k and it turns out it maxes out my upload speed at 90-100 mbps and casting a super slow motion 720p  barely indecated on the chart with just a few mbps.

Got it, thanks.  Unfortunately my Sony 4K TV was the last model year before they switched to Android TVs.  (I actually like the old Sony interface better than the new Android ones, but that doesn't help me here!)

Oh dang!  I see that "Cast to Device" option in File Explorer... and it sees my XBR65X900B

... but when I try to cast the MP4 file... the TV says "Content Not Supported"

Pictures work, although they are in a shrunken box in the middle of the screen...
