Z2 won't turn on, flashing Sony Logo, only connects in Fastboot mode

Yesterday my Z2 suddenly stopped working on an almost full charge. I have tried charging it in various ways, to no effect. I then went to a repair shop where they opened the phone, disconnected and reconnected the battery, which did nothing. They then tried a new battery which also did nothing.

EDIT: I read a post for an identical problem but on an Xperia T which was solved by using Update Service because PC Companion didn't work - however, because Update Service is discontinued I cannot use that fix, it just gives an error message and closes.

Right now the status of the phone is:

Unplugged:

  • Completely unresponsive.
  • All combinations of button presses have no effect.

Plugged into wall charger:

  • LED flashes bright red, then turns off, then dull red for a slightly longer time while the screen flashes the white Sony and Xperia logos. Then it repeats.
  • Holding the power button causes a single vibration after a while, but no other effect.
  • All other buttons and combinations have no effect.
  • Can't enter flashmode or fastboot mode.

Plugged into PC via USB:

  • LED flashes red, green, red (no gaps), then a pause, and red, green, red again.
  • Pressing volume up will take it to fastboot mode (solid blue light).
  • Volume up + power has no effect.
  • Volume down has no effect.
  • Pushing red off button next to USB also does nothing.
  • The PC makes the USB connect sound and then the disconnect sound very soon after, repeatedly, unless the phone is in fastboot mode.

While I can access the phone in fastboot mode, it is not able to connect in Flashmode so that it can be repaired by Xperia Companion.

Any advice would be appreciated.

@Vorakan, sorry for a late reply.

My guess is that what you are experiencing is related to hardware rather than software considering that a software repair didn't help with sorting this out. My recommendation is that you have your device sent to an authorized service centre to be examined.

Let me know how it goes!
