Xperia Z5 Compact - Partial Screen unresponsive

Hi,

I am using a Sony Z5 Compact E5823.

I purchased this phone in early April, this year. At the time, it was running Android Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box. A month later, it updated to Android Marshmallow 6.0.1. I've been using it without issue, since then. My daily usage of the phone spans phone calls, text messaging, Skype video calls, emails, internet browsing and music.

I haven't used this phone roughly, the phone has not sustained any kind of damage, even minor. I also have not used any screen protector of any kind, since purchasing the phone.

Here is the problem;

About a few weeks ago, I began to notice part of the screen not responding. This was noticed while scrolling through a website in Chrome. I noticed that the scrolling stopped, somewhere in the middle of the screen, then resumed. At first, I didn't think much of it. But then, I noticed that in Landscape mode, when I type something, a few keys do not respond. I ran the Sony Diagnostics tool, in-built into the phone and did the Screen Test. I found that in the middle of the LCD screen, there is a line that doesn't show any touch response at all. That is the line where I first noticed the issue with the scrolling.

I have had an online chat with Sony's support staff and I was advised to check the issue by doing a Software Repair via Xperia Companion. I have not yet attempted that, because I need to conduct a backup of my files first.

But what I want to know is if there is any documentation of Xperia devices losing partial screen touch response due to software issues and if so, what is the probability of the issue being resolved by doing a Software Repair via Xperia Companion?

If all else fails, including the Software Repair, then I probably will have to go to a Sony Service Centre. But I'm dreading that, as I wouldn't want to have to do without the phone for a good week or so.

Can someone help, please? Thanks!

Sisil K.

Test the phone

Settings > about phone > diagnostics > test > test touchscreen.

I have tested the phone, as stated in my original post.

After conducting the test, I can clearly see a stripe about 1cm in width, spanning one side to the other, which is unresponsive.

That's most likely a hardware issue, you could repair the phone with XC but you might have to stop by your Local support to get it inspected.

That's for sure a hardware issue. Had the same problem with two other Sony phones. Either I am very unlucky or that is a problem Sony has with its phones. Go to the service center.

If that's the case, then I don't think I'm going to bother with Software Repair, because I'll just be plain disappointed if I find the issue hasn't been fixed, requiring me to go to the Service Centre.

I remember a similar issue I had with my Xperia Z2, where the screen just decided to go crazy on me. It started registering multiple touches everywhere on the screen, all of a sudden, without warning and to my horror. Touch combinations would go into my phone book and call some random person up, send random messages via Text or any of the other social media messengers I had installed, play games on its own. It was erratic and terrifying. I had to replace the LCD screen and immediately soon after got rid of it.

I bought this one in the hopes that after 3 generations, Sony might've gotten it right. But as I see it now, there are yet some lingering issues. After typing out the first post on this thread, I noticed another stripe of defective area on the screen, but thinner than the first defective stripe, thankfully. I'm sorely disappointed.
