Xperia X8 Update fail

I have the Xperia X8, version 1.6 and I am trying to update to 2.1...

I have downloaded the Sony Bridge (for Mac), have connected the phone and it has notified me there is a software update. Everytime I try to update it, it attempts to download update engine, then briefly 'talking to update engine' then reverts to the download bar, completes it again, attempts to talk and the cycle continues until I get a screen saying 'there was an issue with the update engine. Please contact Technical Support'...

So here I am - what is going on, how can I fix this and update from the archaic 1.6 to something that will support the apps I want!!

can you borrow a PC it'll be a lot easier

Hi, uninstall and reinstall Bridge for Mac software.
