Hello everyone,
I bought the Xperia U last July, and ran it on Gingerbread till November. The GPS was working fine then. I would get a fix on my location on Google Maps in less than a minute at most. Thereafter, I upgraded to ICS.
After the ICS update, the GPS can't seem to get a fix on my location like it used to before. It now takes nearly 15-20 minutes to get a fix, and even then the phone tends to lose the signal frequently. I checked with an app called 'GPS Status' and I can see the phone is unable to lock on to any satellite most of the time.
All this has started only after the ICS update, so I think it is an issue with the software. What should I do? Please post your advice.
Thank you!
First of all go to settings > location services. If Google's location service in unmarked it will take longer time for the GPS to determine your position.
If the problem persists with this marked you can press *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialer. Then go to service tests > GPS > Purge assistance data. Restart your phone and try again. It will take a bit longer time for the GPS to find your position the first times after you have purge assistance data. But after a few times it should be quicker again.

I have the same problem and tried solution in the answer. Didnt't work. I have already sent my phone for repair, but all they did was reinstalling and updating software. GPS worked on 2.3, but not aymore on ICS. I bought this phone because of the upgrade.
Other solutions from users are rooting your phone. But then I'll lose my guarantee. That shouldn't be necessary. This is a problem Sony should fix, so Sony please give a real solution!
By the way, I contacted Xperia Contactcenter with this problem on June 12th, still no answer.
GPS works fine outdoors and in a vehicle. It doesnt work indoors. Maybe the receptor is not as powerful as other costly devices.
Anyways try activating the google location services which uses the mobile towers for rough location estimation. Also a soft reset may help.
Regards.
after I brought my Xperia u I didn't use it in ginger bread version even a minute. I directly updated it to Ics. then I found out my GPS is not working. first I suspect it was a hardware glitch. so I went to seller. but he didn't fix it. so I decided to downgrade my phone to GB. then after the downgrade I found my GPS working for first time it got locked within 15 seconds :-). also speed of my phone improved significantly. so I suggest you to remove that Ics update and use GB.
cheers,
