Xperia U Camera Quality

Xperia U Camera Quality

I bought the Xperia U three days ago. Though it offers a 5MP camera with HD video recording, the picture quality and video quality are substandard. Due to the absence of an SD card, the picture and video compression rates are too high. Digital noise is present even at the pictures taken in full day light. Highly pixelated video is produced even at 720p recording. It would be great if somebody help me to set the video and photo comression rate to minimum. Or please give me a link to the app that can decrease the compression rate.

The phone comes with a 5MP camera and I have the right to get a decent picture and video quality. I have an xperia mini pro also. The video and picture quality of the mini pro was average and I was satisfied with it. Both these phones come with 5mp camera.

Set at 5mp resolution and tried different iso-s. Still not getting upto a satisfactory level.

DSC_0022.jpgDSC_0023.jpgscreenshot_2012-06-24_1328.pngThe digital noise is present even at full sunlight. I really need help to reduce the photo and video compression rate. Is there any app available to rectify this problem? Any help would be great.

Also posting an image taken with Xperia mini pro

I agree with my Xperia friend, I'm very dissapointed with your photo/video camera. My old K610i at 2MP took greater pictures than Xperia U. Samsung Ace also makes much better pictures. There is too much noise and indoors with the flash is a mess at all resolutions. You can't even read a label or a text in the photo if it's not big enough (like a graffitti or a big outdoor ad). It's not acceptable. So Unnikuttan you're not alone in this one.

Here are 2 photos with flash (3MP at 2m distance). First SONY, next Samsung Ace (same settings). So, how can SONY comes out with such camera (or soft) on the market? You don't test them before? Nokia is losing market share big time, RIM also, HTC tries to keep up with the leader Samsung. With this kind of phones what is SONY's future?

Let me give you a hint maybe this will help Sony technicians to fix it: the noise is already on the screen before taking the picture. The image is not clear (especially in a dark environment indoor) with or without Bravia Engine checked and at all settings (white balance, ISO, focus, MP etc). In the daylight also there is noise but is hard to see it because of the sun light, but you can see it in the picture after. Is there a solution or should I buy another mobile?

Hi, if you use ISO800 both digital noise and the "bluish" color of the leaves are normal (sensors are less accurate in rendering color when you push ISO up). You should not use such a high ISO level in daylight, when it is not needed.

Also, always use the full native resolution of the sensor, you will have the best quality and you will always be able to resize the picture later if you need.

Try to leave the camera in auto mode and 5mp: do you still get different results from the mini pro?

To get less jpeg compression, try another camera app which lets you choose the compression level. I use Vignette and like it a lot, though you have to buy the paid version to unlock the 5mp resolution, anyway I don't think that your problems are caused by jpeg compression...

My suggestion is to wait till the android ICS update is available for this phone. I hope they will rectify this problem with that update. I hope the update can rectify the problem. If the problem persist even after the update I'm going to say good bye to sony forever.

Thank you ghecea-RO for your time. have a nice day.

ICS for Xperia U will be ready on Q3 but I'm skeptical because Xperia U has only 512 MB RAM which some say isn't enough. But anyway, until then maybe Sony support can tell us what can we do.

Here is another proof of the poor picture quality for Xperia U:

And to be more precise, check the blue or green areas in the left side.

Hi,

If anyone is still having problems with the image compression problem, I suggest you try out Camera Zoom FX. It's a great camera app and has a setting to set jpeg compression level. The normal file size I would get with the stock camera app (5 mp) was around 500kb - 800kb, but when I used the app, it produced 1.5 - 1.8mb files. It also looked a lot sharper and the colors were more accurate.

I hope this helps.
