Xperia Arc Camera Image Quality

Hi folks,

It may come as a shock, but I have to say that I'm genuinely dissappointed with the native image quality from my new 8mp Xperia Arc Crying_Face

I've had plenty of camera phones, but I have never witnessed such over-sharpening and over-compression in my jpegs !

I recently took 50-60 images in bright sunny conditions with intermittent cloud (availing of low ISO) and even at it's ISO 80 setting, the jpegs are being compressed and over-sharpened within an inch of their life.

  • How can the average file size from an 8mp sensor (3264x2448 pixels) be a miserably small 1.4mb ? I've had 6mp sensors producing, at a minimum, 1.9mb sized files.
  • If you can select 2mb, 6mb and 8mb resolution sizes, why can't Xperia Arc users select a desired quality / compression level ? I'm thinking low, medium, fine, super-fine.
  • Similarly why can't Xperia Arc users select the sharpness level : low, medium, high ?

Surely budding Xperia Arc photographers would much rather have a) image quality and b) sharpness settings over the current nice-to-have options like Metering (which is not neccessary if you simply use your Exposure Value option) ?

I'm aware that various photo editing android apps exist (and I have run a number of them through their paces), but by all accounts they're simply piggy backing the native output jpegs.

Am I missing something here - are image quality & sharpness options too much to ask from a flagship 8mp snapper ??

Regards,
Paul

Sounds like a slight improvement Bimal, as typically a 6MP 16:9 picture would occupy 1.5Mb on my Arc.

You're lucky, in the UK not we're not likely to get the official ICS upgrade until June/ July, but even then I'm not sure if I will want to have as I am finding it hard to have enough RAM free for my apps and keep things running smoothly. Let us know how you get on with ICS... out of curiosity are the hard buttons still used in the same way as in 2.3.4?

Nirmy, mine is not the official upgrade either. It is for LT18i, but since there is not much difference between the two apart from LT18i having 1.4 Ghz processor, it works smoothly. And, hard buttons work the same way. Slightly_smiling_Face

You can try the below links to upgrade yours too.

The Arc will be recognized by Google PlayStore, SEUS, PC Companion, etc as Arc S.

And do not forget to backup Contacts, Messages and Apps beforehand.

I'd rather wait until end of May for the official ICS for LT15i..

No worries about this. I don't know what it means anyway since I'm not a native Englisher.

I installed Camera ICS, and the image size increased to about 2.5 MB.

Perhaps I see some improvement in details.

Just found this forum/thread, & it's come as a bit of a shock!

I've been under the impression(after much research) that the Arc S has very good image quality for a 'phone, comparable to the iPhone4/SGS2 etc, in fact it's the main reason why I was about to buy an Arc S(OK, I admit the price is attractive).

Is it really true that all the reviewers can be so wrong, or are they all believing the SE hype?

Any comments?

thanks
