I got the X8 a couple of days ago, I love the phone, but not being able to send texts is bothering me.
I am with Vodafone Ireland, I refreshed the SMSC number and it says "+35387699989,145".
The +35387699989 part is correct, but I'm not sure why the , 145 is there.
I have tried removing the , 145 part and hitting update, but I get an update error.
The phone has 47.27MB Available Space.
It's running Android 2.1 (I purchased the phone with it already installed).
I have tried several different sims including a new one I got today.
If anyone could help me get it working I would be most grateful, thanks.

Uliwooly. I have the same problem as the poster but then am in Belgium and my service provider is Base. Please I would appreciate if you can help me out with what to do to fix the problem of not being able to send sms. I love xperia x8. Thanks in anticipation of a swift response.
there are many reasons why is it that you can't send SMS/MMS, one could be bc of the APN settings (Try the above solution)
if you were able to send sms/mms before but you can't anymore then you probably have a LOT of SMS/MMS on your messaging app, if you want to save them either use the backup & restore app or some of this apps to back them up (I prefer backup SMS+ )
SMS/MMS
if you don't want to use the backup & restore app then
Install "backup SMS" to back up your SMS and MMS to your Gmail
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&feature=search_result
or your SMS use
"backup & restore SMS"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result
or for your MMS use "Save MMS"
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.schwimmer.android.mmsextract&feature=search_result
Call Logs
And for call logs this is great
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.yang.android.ansta
after that either go to
settings -> privacy -> factory reset (this will delete everything even apps so make sure you backup everything)
or use PC Companion or Update Service to repair your phone
