Hi,
After the lollipop upgrade, my wifi connectivity at home became extremely unstable. It would work for a few moments and then disconnect, sometimes reporting an authentication error.
No other devices on the network were struggling, including a nexus 4 running lollipop. The Z3 would work fine on other networks at work etc and was ok when on KitKat.
I am running custom DD-WRT routers at home which were running WPA2/TKIP encryption.
I enabled developer debugging mode and searched the logs files but there were no messages being logged when the wifi dropped.
Sonys Online chat was the usual, it must be your ISPs fault.
I deleted my google settings backup and did a full repair from the PC client but after a couple of hours the issue returned.
The Authenticion Error sometimes reported in the wifi network list led me to start adjusting the encryption method my routers used.
Once I changed the encyption methods from TKIP to AES all of the issues went away.
I'm not sure if it is an issue with Sony's TKIP handling (I suspect it is as no other devices had issues) but everythink has been working fine for 5 days since changing it.
I'm just posting this incase anyone else encounters the same issue I had with my Z3 because I was on the verge of taking it back for a refund as it was useless to me at home.
Cheers
Sorry to hear that you had issues with WiFi but glad to hear that you found a solution and thanks for the feedback!
It's not a known issue but i will forward this internally for investigation. In case we should need it, may i contact you and ask for logs?
I took the liberty of changing your topic a little to specify the issue.
I have the same WLAN problem with my Z3 since updated to 5.0.2. I'm helpless.
We've been testing this but i'm afraid we can't find any issue on our end.
Do you know if the phone was connected with 802.11n or 802.11b/g when this happened? The 802.11n standard doesn't support TKIP but perhaps some routers and firmwares allows this anyway which could cause issues.
Sorry to hear that.
You mean that it works fine when your router is set to use AES but not TKIP?
@Rickard,
I think it was setup as 802.11n. I assume it would fall back to a 802.11b/g but you raise a good point.
Interestingly, when the lollipop upgrade first happened, wifi worked fine for the first 12 hours. I didn't start having issues until I left the range of the AP and came back.
None of the other devices had an issues talking to the AP so not sure why it was just the Z3 on Lollipop.
It should fall back to b/g (it does when we're testing it) but it may also be related to the router and its firmware.
You havent seen any issues since switching to AES?
@Richard, I don't know if the issue has to do with wifi encryption. I've nothing changed with it.
It was a similar sequence like "ninjasftw" has described: "Interestingly, when the lollipop upgrade (5.0.2) first happened, wifi worked fine", maybe 1 or 2 Days.
In my case It is important to mention, that Bluetooth as well can't be activated since the WLAN problems.
Also it seems important to me that, in the beginning of the losses sometimes it worked intermittently for short times. But after software-repairing through PC-Companion two-times Wifi & Bluetooth are completely dead.
Because of an unsatisfactory chat with Xperia Care ...
...technician: "there is no problem with the update known" and "it's IRRELEVANT, that other users have such problems" !!
now I will send my device back in guarantee.
Yes, i would recommend that you send it in for further investigation and repairs in that case. As you also have issues with bluetooth and it can't even be enabled even though you performed a software repair i'm afraid this sounds like a hardware issue.
