Why is Google Chrome using up my data?

I had a look at the data useage feature on the Z2, and found out Chrome was one of the applications using most of my data. I did a test and it said it has used  6.96MB so far (it did this within 10 minutes), then I visited a webpage on Chrome, and went back to have a look at the data useage and it went up to 9.58mb. I was also on a game for 3 minutes and I used 18.3mb. I'm sure these app's dont use this much data so quickly?
