Taking a quick guess I'd say that PCC deleted the files, so you'll have to get it to do a repair, then bail out before it actually performs it on the phone. Yes, it sounds scary, but (if memory serves me well enough) you can't actually proceed on after downloading the firmware until you physically disconnect and reconnect your phone. You could probably take advantage of that to grab the files and abort the update (obviously, back up your stuff first in case Murphy decides to show up in style).
Oh, and remember to keep your phone on and not off because who knows if PCC might decide to proceed on its merry way to flash everything, innocently thinking that the phone was nearly bricked.
