Warning - ICS Update Broke Hotspot and USB Tether

ST18a updated this afternoon to the second release of ICS (was using first release previous to this).

USB Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot are no longer working.  I can connect and get an IP address but no internet access.

This is real bad since this is a primary use for my phone.

UPDATE: Confirmed same behavior with a second laptop ... I can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone but no internet access.

UPDATE: iPad via Wi-Fi Hotspot, same thing, gets IP address but no internet access.

I never had any tethering problems for as long as I've been using ICS. Lucky me.

I think I solved it.

First time I flashed an eastern Europe ROM (Czech) to root it and didn't work tether. Then I tried with an US ROM and didn't work, so I gave up.

Reading your posts I decided to try an Iberia ROM (I live in Spain) and everything seems that it works perfectly.

You can flash them with FlashTool. Remember to uncheck "Wipe User Data" flag to not lose all your personal configuration.

As long as I know, this doesn't unlocks your bootloader nor makes you root, so it doesn't void your warranty. Links are ok, if you have a problem, pm to me and I'll send you a private Dropbox link.

At least it worths giving a try.

I update my smartphone (Xperia Neo-MT15a) ICS. 4.0. last month but my smartphone's has got  too much options in Andiroid 2.3 version. For example I dont use wi-fi applications, usb internet conneciton and screenshot etc.

Ha! Sony PC Companion sucks!!! I guess more so Sony sucks! I flashed my phone back to GB and of course WiFi and USB tethering both work again. But when checking for updates, it tells me that I have the latest software available for my phone.

Android version: 2.3.4

Build number: 4.0.2A.0.62

Planning on just keeping GB on this phone until I find a newer phone that I like.

J just had a chat today with Sony support in French about the tethering issue. The answer is "yes a new update will come soon" . This is not the first time I have receivesuch an answer. I was also propose to go back to the former android (which work well). So I will wait until the end of the year!

Hi I am Xperia S user (LT26i) 4.0.4 version (6.1.A.2.45 Build Number). I aslo encountered that USB tethering and Wifi Hotspot do not work after upgrading ICS.

Hope Sony can solve this issue in coming software update for Xperia S.

Here is what worked for me: go to settings - mobile networks - APNs, then modify default APN settings to be the same as the current data provider's APN settings.

It seems that when teathering, device defaults to trying to establish connect ion thru default APN, and failing, if that's not the right data service provider anymore.

Using LT18a with ICS 4.1.b.0.431
