Warning - ICS Update Broke Hotspot and USB Tether

ST18a updated this afternoon to the second release of ICS (was using first release previous to this).

USB Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot are no longer working.  I can connect and get an IP address but no internet access.

This is real bad since this is a primary use for my phone.

UPDATE: Confirmed same behavior with a second laptop ... I can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone but no internet access.

UPDATE: iPad via Wi-Fi Hotspot, same thing, gets IP address but no internet access.

Yesterday I called for the 5th time since july Sony mobile France. I was told that in october (when I called in july it was in august) an  android 4.1 jelly bean will be release as an update, it will solve the tethering problem that most of us have. Although the date of the release we are all waiting for has been posponed about every time I called!! I still wait an other few weeks to go back to gingerbread. The local Sony outlet takes rendez vous by phone to do the downgrade(which happens to be an upgrade) in ten minutes I was told. That tell how popular is ISC in sony Xperia cells

Not all Xperia models can unlock their bootloader, so you can't install a custom rom. Today I tried with mine and couldn't do it... So, only way to have ICS or JB is via official Sony firmware...

Besides, maybe for you warranty isn't important. But there are a lot of people that cares about it and can't afford to buy a new phone in case they brick theirs.

have you tried unlocking the bootloader from http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions

the poing about warranty is how much you value your time. If you spend many hours tried to fix it, how much cost that? I tried to to fix it once, the immediately switch to cm9. Anyway, there is a fix available right now... if somthing goes wrong you can always flash back to factory.

I tried with 2 different phones (I have both black and a white SK17i) and this is what I got

I can't unlock bootloader to any of them, so I'm stuck within stock firmware.

My Phone:

Model: Xperia S, LT26i

OS: Android version 4.0.4

Sony Firmware build: 6.1.A.2.45

Country: US

Carrier: AT&T, with new family data shared plan.

I found a fix in the xda forums that works for my Xperia S. Basically, if you have the T-Mobile APN still listed as an APN and CANNOT DELETE IT, you have to change the settings for it to cooperate with your other Carrier (AT&T for me) because the device seems to use that as the Tethering APN. I had seen another post (possibly an earlier post in this thread) that said to change the APN Type to "default, supl, dun" for your Carrier. That change may conflict with the Default APN/T-Mobile APN if it's still listed. I can only imagine non-rooted devices can't delete this APN for some strange reason, unless you are supposed to change it instead of create a new one (I imagine you can just change it all to your carrer). Most instructions just say to create  a new APN, which may lead to this issue, which is still likely a firmware bug.

Credit goes to ngold from xda forums. I'm quoting that post below:

"The T-Mobile APN seems to be the designated Tethering APN, you need another APN for non-tethering activities.

You'd need to create a AT&T APN with wap.cingular , then change the T-Mobile APN also to wap.cingular , and delete all the proxy and mms info.

Do not delete "APN type: dun" in the T-Mobile setting, or else your APN setting privilage will be disabled until factory reset."

In my case, I simply set APN Type to "dun" for the T-Mobile, and cleared the APN Type from the AT&T APN config. My guess is that this could work if you just overwrite the T-Mobile APN for your carrier instead of creating a new one.

Actual post with fix is post #56 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27277483

Message was edited by: mastahype After checking the posts in the middle of this thread, I see others have posted similar changes. However, it was clear to me the issue was related to having the two APNs and the "dun" setting for my phone after experiencing the same missing internet for tethering. Also added my phone info.

Esta es la unica y verdadera solucion al problema reportado

No esd bug del ICS, no es falla de la configuracion del telefono, solo es una falla del APN de su operador

Solo hay que editar la configuracion del APN que que viene por defecto con los datos de su operador local y listo.

Really solution. It's work !!!!

Or you could realize not everyone in the world has AT&T (not even all carriers put undeleteable APNs), that solution is for another problem.

If you read other posts you will notice that people in this thread have tested their chips and configurations on others phones of the same carrier, wich made tethering work. I personally have a friend who has the same carrier, contract and APN configurations as me, the difference is he has a ST18i instead of a ST18a.

People in this thread had thetering working fine on GB, upgrading broke it, downgrading fixed it, and re-upgrading broke it again.

It is really good that your problem was solved, but we have another one.

Sony is really disapointing and i am impressed with such lack of response. GIVE US BACK TETHERING... Are you considering customers are important for you ??

Tell us anything : we will fix, we will not fix, but SAY SOMETHING about tethering bug in ICS !!
