Warning - ICS Update Broke Hotspot and USB Tether

ST18a updated this afternoon to the second release of ICS (was using first release previous to this).

USB Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot are no longer working.  I can connect and get an IP address but no internet access.

This is real bad since this is a primary use for my phone.

UPDATE: Confirmed same behavior with a second laptop ... I can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone but no internet access.

UPDATE: iPad via Wi-Fi Hotspot, same thing, gets IP address but no internet access.

In my case, yes.

I'm currently answering using my computer via USB Tethering with my Xperia Ray downgraded to Gingerbread (with 3G connection).

iaselle,

Have you tried the latest ICS.587 version yet?  I tried it and hotspot/tethering are still not working.

I am going to have to send my phone back again to downgrade to GB.

To be honest, I do not plan anymore to upgrade to ICS.

I have rooted my phone, installed quite many applications and I'm happy with my current configuration.

Reinstalling from scratch would take a few hours I can spend to something else

My Phone:

Model: Xperia S, LT26i

OS: Android version 4.0.4

Sony Firmware build: 6.1.A.2.45

Country: US

Carrier: AT&T, with new family data shared plan.

I found a fix in the xda forums that works for my Xperia S. Basically, if you have the T-Mobile APN still listed as an APN and CANNOT DELETE IT, you have to change the settings for it to cooperate with your other Carrier (AT&T for me) because the device seems to use that as the Tethering APN. I had seen another post (possibly an earlier post in this thread) that said to change the APN Type to "default, supl, dun" for your Carrier. That change may conflict with the Default APN/T-Mobile APN if it's still listed. I can only imagine non-rooted devices can't delete this APN for some strange reason, unless you are supposed to change it instead of create a new one (I imagine you can just change it all to your carrer). Most instructions just say to create  a new APN, which may lead to this issue, which is still likely a firmware bug.

Credit goes to ngold from xda forums. I'm quoting that post below:

"The T-Mobile APN seems to be the designated Tethering APN, you need another APN for non-tethering activities.

You'd need to create a AT&T APN with wap.cingular , then change the T-Mobile APN also to wap.cingular , and delete all the proxy and mms info.

Do not delete "APN type: dun" in the T-Mobile setting, or else your APN setting privilage will be disabled until factory reset."

In my case, I simply set APN Type to "dun" for the T-Mobile, and cleared the APN Type from the AT&T APN config. My guess is that this could work if you just overwrite the T-Mobile APN for your carrier instead of creating a new one.

Actual post with fix is post #56 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27277483

Message was edited by: mastahype After checking the posts in the middle of this thread, I see others have posted similar changes. However, it was clear to me the issue was related to having the two APNs and the "dun" setting for my phone after experiencing the same missing internet for tethering. Also added my phone info.

Thanks for elaborating on my earlier suggestion. Confirming this did the trick for me too. The 'dun' part is important,  to not have to do a factory reset or wait for another update,  to get back into APN settings.

I suspect the firmware update added this unwanted T-mobile APN,  as I never added it myself.

I'm very sorry to tell you this a specific "patch" for a "specific" company. This phone in other countries does not include that "T-mobile" APN, thus this is not real cause (nor solution) to problem.

Please realize that "T-Mobile" and "Cingular" are not available worldwide, but problem is still on.

I tried with a Spain Vodafone card and tethering was broken with ICS. Same card on another phone (a Samsung) with ICS works fine.
