Can we make video calls without using any apps?

I think most android phones dont support video calling without apps, this is afeature missing in android

But some companies like samsung have added this to some of their phones so that they can make video calls without any apps

there are other threads on the same topic, the answer its simple

  1. you need an app such as skype, tango, Gtalk, etc and a data plan or wifi to make a video call
  2. Android does NOT support native video calls
  3. there are some androids phones that can do this but thats not part of android it was implemented by that OEM
  4. it has been requested since the first Sony Xperia (Android) phone but it hasn't and most likely will not be implemented (native video calls)

Oh damn!! but that is so sad!! is there no way that Sony can do this, all the latest phones have this feature even though they are android. Even the micromax has video calling

video calls are not as simple as you understand it to be - yes if samsung include an app that allows this feature it will only be between samsung devices

you see in order to create a video call requires compatable software on both devices - that is fine if it's two samsung devices - there is no industry standard that supports this unfortunately

the reason why Sony (and others) have elected not to include this on their devices is because (as already explained) 3rd party software provides it - like skype

if google want to include this function as part of their OS well fine then a standard of sorts will be created between all of android - as it stands google have elected not to do this

take your issue up with them Winking_Face

or install skype - but again you can only have video call with other skype users

this has nothing to do with sony or their devices - hope this answers your question

There is a standard which has been implemented by most phone manufacturers (probably Sony before they switched to android) that does not use the Internet but uses the 3G network, it is known as 3g-324M its been around for about 10 years and I think this is what the OP was referring to. . Apple iPhones don't support it and it's not part of the android system. It can be expensive to use depending on the mobile operator. I tried it once on my Nokia N8 as a quick 10 second test and it cost  me a lot.  I don't know of anyone that actually uses it in the UK but maybe it is more popular in other countries.

With the advent of the Internet,  apps such as skype have really taken over but as you say both parties have to be running the same app for it to work.

a standard by "most phone manufacturers"? as you pointed out that's old, the new OS doesn't support that anymore, as there's better HD video calls, skype, Gtalk, tango, even the competition facetime, it's time to move on Dizzy_Face
