Unaccountable frame damage & disappointing service

I wondered if anybody has experienced this (though I guess not many Xperia Z3 customer would use this forum).I didn't know how this happened. I left my phone on the desk and went to shop some groceries. No one touched my phone while I was away and the phone was impossible to drop itself from or throw itself out of the desk. I was gutted  to find that the frame ended like this (see picture) when I came back. I’ve expected Z3 last several years given its price and its advertisement on its superb quality when I bought it at the end of February. And I’ve taken good care of it ever since - never submerged into water, never placed into side or back pockets. The last thing I expect was that it became damaged only after 5 months (the damage happened at the end of July), let alone damage to the frame.

I already sent it back because the phone was still in warranty, but the reply I received was:

‘The display of your device is damaged. To solve the problem, the display must be replaced.’

Excuse me, but the problem of my device had nothing to do with display. The display works perfectly. It seemed to me that Sony were just reluctant to fix the problem and admit the phone had faults. So I contacted Sony again and they said they would investigate. After the investigation, they then said it was the frame that was damaged, not mentioning the 'display' any more. And they said the damage to the frame was not manufacturing defect and refused to repair or replace the device for free.

How could it NOT be a defect or fault when the frame was suddenly damaged by itself?  Say if the frame damage would be caused by force, how big the force would need to be in order to make the metal frame bulge, as was shown in the picture? How could it be possible that the glass screen would remain intact while the metal frame was damaged, if such external force existed? Or if the glass screen was stronger than the metal frame in the case of Z3, which would have been a physical breakthrough to prove that glass was stronger than metal.

Not happy when they asked me to pay for repairing such damage while I didn't cause the damage in the first place. Nor would daily usage caused such damage - if daily usage could be able to do such damage to the frame, the quality of a flagship phone would be worth questioning. If by any chance I had dropped or bent the phone and thus the frame was damaged, I would be willing to pay for the repair and I wouldn’t have wasted my time negotiating with the customer service - but I didn't! I was not even using my phone when the frame damage occured!

I would not have found out that Sony’s mobile phones had so many problems if it weren’t for the damage to my Z3. Given that Xperia Z3 has so many problems, now I really suspect the quality of this device. In addition, I'm deeply disappointed by the customer service Sony and seriously regret buying this phone instead of iPhone. My old iPhone 5 functions perfectly after 3 years of use and its screen has never been broken despite I've accidentally dropped the iPhone before. My boyfriend is still using my old iPhone 5 and everything is working fine. In contrast, this new Z3 I bought is damaged only after 5 months of usage - god knows how many problems to come in the future.

Not impressed by Z3 at all! DO NOT BUY Sony Xperia Z3 if you want to have a great user eXperiance. In addition to the questionable quality of Z3, the customer service from Sony was a great shame. Really DISAPPOINTED and will NOT buy any Sony products ever in the future.

@Tiffanyye12

I'm sorry to hear that but you have to contact your local Xperia Care

Then as you are in the Uk you need to ask Sony for a deadlock letter which allows you to take legal action and you will also need an approved independent engineers report to backup your claim that this is an inherent fault

Based on your image and your previous posts to me that looks like someone has tried to open the device and bent the frame - there's no way it would deform like that by just sitting there so it looks like someone has tried to pry something under the glass to lift it from the frame

I agree Thommo. But I can't see any one being able to bend it out like that without damaging the screen?

But again it wouldn't just do that it's self.
Very curious

That's more like a pry tool or pick and someone tried to create a gap bending it outwards in order to get a perch on the screen and though when the screen was removed they could simply bend it back

Thanks for your advice!

I swear to God that nobody has tried to open the phone or anything, whether you believe or not. If I or anybody had tried to do that to the phone, I wouldn't have written this post :smileycry:. If I or anybody had done that to the phone, I would be more than willing to pay for whatever cost to fix the phone.

As a student, I really don't have enough resource and funds to take further legal actions towards a giant like Sony. I don't think I would be able to pay for an independent engineer to give a report on this.

Just as people whoese phone screen cracked itself, maybe I was just unlucky to get a faulty one.

I'm really sorry for what happened to your Z3. Surely this is a very rare incident. I've heard about self cracking back glass but this is somthing new. As you strongly insist that there was no human action causing this, brings lot more anxiety.

I've heard that Aluminium may expand upon extreme heating but there is no way that the phone could have got that much hot. Impossible!

I request you to enquire people who were present at that time. Maybe children. But this is still confusing because there are no marks or dents anywhere near that.

Or is this a manufacturing defect where, this certain aluminium frame had too much density(aluminium) which caused force and made this. (This is my stupid guess).

No children at home. Just me and my boyfriend and we both went out.

I think this is very likely to be a rare case though, maybe only 1 out of 1000 or more. That's why I feel so unlucky. I'm expecting some point in the future  the screen may crack, dents may happen or even the phone may no longer be water proof, though I've been careful not to let these happen since I got the phone.

But this... this is absolutely not anticipated.

I don't know if moist and overheating could result in this. I suspect if any prying tools would possibly be able to warp the metal frame like this though.

I remembered the phone was next to my small pouch on the desk, which has magnetic button clasp snaps, but it does not make any sense that the button can do this to the frame.

I wish I had CCTV set up so that I can know what happened really...

Well, My guess is, that particular frame might be defective.
