So I bought my brand new SONY Xperia Z1 compact and finally got my SIM card to use it. Getting the little plastic SIMcard holder was super hard. I put the SIM card in, properly, and the phone won't read it! I'm 100% sure it's not a problem of the card because I tested it on another phone before. Now I can't even get the SIM card out. I have a suspicion I bought a defect Phone!? How does the warranty work?? Extremely sad! Please HELP!

Contact xperia care and take your phone to closest sony service.
I have exactly the same problem. Micro SIM works fine in Xperia P, and in Xperia Ray with adapter, whereas Z1 Compact won't recognise it. I went to 2degrees shop to try their micro SIM, and the same thing happened, so it is 100% phone fault.
I will try contacting Sony in New Zealand and will post my experience. It is disappointing though, after so much hype, waiting for the phone, getting accessories and migrating data that I can't use the **bleep** thing.
I called Sony Xperia Care, and I can tell you this is the last Sony phone I will ever buy. The CSR basically blew me off and said that they will not be repairing the phone under warranty because I did not buy in in New Zealand. What a **bleep**ty attitude Sony. After using Sony phones for over 10 years, you finally made me decide you're not worth my money any more. What a crappy customer service Sony.
When Apple had issues with antennae, they came to the party and sorted people out. When Sony has a fault, they just fobb you off. So don't bother calling Sony Experia Care, because THEY DON'T CARE.
I am sorry for this.
U tried the false side?
Had the problem too
There is only one right side on this phone, you can't make a mistake as it has a tray that basically spells it out to you which way you should place the SIM card.
So can we have an answer please Sony? the instructions I have found do not show me how to insert the SIM card. There is no 'tray' or 'holder' I can see just a floppy bit of paper with no space above it (and something plastic underneath which isn't identified in the usless drawings of the parts of the phone).??
Inserting the sim card caught me out as well found the instructions provided with the phone to be very unclear compared with the instructions on their website but all too late for me, waiting for it to be returned but the process is rather long winded compared with the service that APPLE provide.
I almost missed the little tray - I pulled it out when trying to insert the sim card, and I had no idea it was a tray. Only after an hour of intense frustration did I notice a diagram on a small loose piece of paper that showed how to put the card into the tray. I was very relieved that I hadn't thrown it out - the tray just looks like a random bit of plastic.
The documentation for that very critical piece of information should be front and centre in the Getting Started manual, not on a loose sheet that can easily be overlooked.
