Tips on running a software repair

It would appear that I need to do a software repair on my Xperia Arc.  How do I do this?  Will it delete all my SMS messages or photos saved on my SD card?  I have checked and I have the latest version of the phone software, but I am having a issue with draft SMS messages that can't be deleted and it has been suggested that I run a software repair and I want to make sure that I don't delete anything off my phone
