Text message count

Text messages are made by 160 characters, but lately it's happening that short messages are counted like 3 or more. A message of 150 characters is sent like 3 messages, every four or five words are marked like one message!

I pay the text messages by the number, so I'd like to understand how to fix the problem and if the count is real or just a bug of the phone with no effects on my bill...

In my language(romanian),there are some special things for writing called diacritics,they take more space in a message.So if I use several diacritics,the message will be filled very fast.

The special characters I could use in my language (Italian) are "à è é ì ò ù" but these occur often and not always they seem to fill the text faster... I will pay attention to which characters seem more heavy than others.
