Sony Xperia Tipo -calendar sync issue

I have a new tipo and am trying to sync it with my pc calendar.  I have installed pc companion on my pc and successfully uploaded my calendar contacts to a google account, but my phone, connected either by wifi or usb cable, will not access the google account.  I have followed the pc companion instructions but always get the message "can't establish a reliable connection to the server".  Am I missing something?

Are you able to sync your contacts or calendar if you go into Settings - Accounts & sync in your phone?

If you haven't tried, please try.
