SE stands by their statement that the 2.1 upgrade provided increased volume for the low earphone in-call volume and the media/speakerphone volume on X10, but by reading forums everyone seems to agree it didn't improve much. However, they did allow for a higher volume (much higher in fact), but your personal volume settings don't allow it to be automatically higher. They have to be increased manually or you would have no warning. If the volume increase was automatic it would have been like starting a car not knowing the stereo volume was left up at full blast. Everyone would be suing SE for damage to their ears or their phones. They put personal volume max settings in the Service Menu of your phone that are controlling the maximum volume right now. So even though additional volume is available, you will have to increase your personal volume max for your speaker to be allowed to hear it. Most TV's are set this way. The volume control on the TV determines the max volume setting, and the remote control cannot go higher than the TV it set.
Follow these steps to allow your phone to use the additional volume from 2.1 upgrade to increase your low-in call/speaker volume.
Try this (for both speaker and earphone, and remeber to manually increase volume during the test)
1) From the lock screen go to service menu by pressing: home, back, back, home, back, home, home, back
2) Then go to service test, to increase in-call volume press >earphone
3) You will hear voice playing, then press > Volume+++ to increase the voice volume.
4) Go back to service test screen, to increase media/speakerphone press >speaker,
5) You will sound playing, then press > Volume+++ to increase the speaker volume.
6) Press back to exit the service menu. Press back again to exit service
7) *** You may also need to manually increase the in-call volume during call to reach new level.(I'm guessing this is a safety measure to protect your hearing from damage)
😎 Please post your results. I am interested to see how it is working for you.
THANK YOU TBDLEE!
Here's the link xda where you can read SE representatives deny there are any issues with the internal speaker...

Come on, I know the number 1 complaint of Xperia x10 owners is low in-call volume, and no one else has tried this out yet? In order for your phone to reach higher volume you have to go into the Service Menu and move up your personal volume max setting up from 75% to allow for the new higher MAX.
We may have to thank SE for the 2.1 upgrade and allowing more power to the internal speaker and a higher volume setting, but we still have MULTI-TOUCH going for discussion boards.
I'll have to try this. Most of the time I'm set up hands-free with the mic adapter and headphones or car speakers, but it is annoying that you can barely hear people when you're just walking down the street trying to listen to your phone.
On the topic of multi-touch, I believe Sony stated the hardware is incapable of supporting multi-touch, so it just isn't going to happen. Am I wrong?
Hey so I just went through the steps. It seems to have worked. I'll have to try it out with a few phone calls in different environments. I'll also try hooking it up to my car stereo and see if it's more amplified. I didn't hear any distortion, which is good.
Thanks.
Glad someone else has tried it and it worked. I've only had my x10a for about a month, and I knew right away that if I couldnt get the upgrade and a solution the the speaker problem I was going to return the phone to AT&T. I didn't know a thing about any of the smartphones, until I lost my 3 year old razor and called ATT about upgrading. I dove head in head first right when the upgrade was supposed to be out. My phone was supposed to come new with 2.1 from ATT, then they convinced me to keep this one because the upgrade was within a couple days...that was Nov 11...I couldn't wait for them so I took matters into my own hands, and now I'm holding one of the few Xperia X10A in United States that is unbranded, unlocked, 2.1 (x10a generic), with no speaker volume problems, live wallpapers, talk to text, skype, flash drive, apps not limited by ATT blocking or 1.6 OS. In less than a month, with some help from forums, I found solutions to everything the Xperia was missing and with no help from ATT or SE. These forums are great. I have come full circle with all the changes, problems, and corporate bull to totally love this phone. It's my new hobby too.
I didn't know what was missing without multitouch was when I bought the phone, and only a few weeks later I can't wait to have to have it. MULTI TOUCH is coming from what I've read and seen, There are some YouTube videos showing people using it on their Xperia.
Well I've now tested out that solution for a couple days. I'm thinking it doesn't add much volume, if any. It might be a case of wishful thinking that it seemed to be louder initially. The speakers seem slightly louder when playing videos but I don't know again if this is just a case of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Maybe it adds a very slight boost, but it isn't something where you would say "Wow! Now I can hear more clearly!" Anyone else try it?
BTW I found an official statement from Sony on multi-touch.

There has been a marginal increase only
From inaudible, it has become slightly audible.
This has been a gift from my daughter, hence I am
unable to discard this phone. in my opinion
this phone is not user friendly.
I wouldn't say that the X10 is an user friendly device 'out of the box'. BUT once you get used to it (Android OS), it's pretty much user friendly to most of us.
Hey, it's just barely over a week, give your new toy a chance to prove itself!
Side track .... as mentioned, it's a gift from your daughter .... think about it, daughter will definitely get something GOOD and affordable (within her budget :smileymischief:) for her dad, right? I would suggest that you take this opportunity to interact more with your daughter, spend time exploring the phone together with her (she should be an Android phone user). Not a bad way to build up a closer relationship!
Hmmmm .... another plus point for the X10. :smileymischief::smileysilly::smileyhappy::smileylaugh:
Enjoy your phone.

this is far from a solution, and it only works if you use a sony ericsson branded rom. Anyone using a custom rom won't have the option to use that menu...however, this means we also don't have the volume level turned down on us either, so this wouldn't be necessary.
Even with the volume turned up through this menu it is still very quiet for most users. I'm fortunate enough that my in-call volume is ok for me...however, the speaker volume is where I have problems. THere is a solution coming soon through custom kernel updates...be patient and our low-volume issues will be a thing of the past
