Based on the information you have supplied, this could be due to an array of things. The first one I suggest checking is if Tap to wake is turned on.
Apps > Settings > Display > Tap to Wake up
This option allows your screen to be turned on with a simple double tap.
Check this and let me know how you get on.
It could be the software for the style cover causing this. Try disconnecting and re-connecting the style cover.
You might also want to reset the smart connect app. You can do this by going to Settings > Apps > Smart Connect > Force Stop > Storage > Clear Data, then restart your phone.
Reconnect it via NFC yes. Clearing the data on the smart connect app will not delete it, it will just reset it to default. Because the smart cover interacts with your screen I am suggesting you reconnect it as a test.
