Problems with 16gb micro sd card

Hi,

I have recently bought the Xperia X10 Mini and a 16 GB micro SD card. When I insert the sd card into the phone it says it is damaged and needs to format it. But when I format it, it still doesn't work. I've even tried formatting it with windows. For example, When I take a picture it just exits out of the camera and doesn't save the picture i took. And when I plug it into the computer and try to transfer files onto the sd card from the phone via the usb cable, it wont copy and says data corrupted. (I know its not the sd card because it works perfectly with other devices.) The phone has even froze a few times.

The 2gb sd card that cam with the phone works fine and the main difference I have spotted between the 2 sd cards is that the 16 gb is formatted to FAT32, whilst the 2gb is formatted to FAT. Is there any way to format the 16gb to FAT without using the phone and the default windows formatter? or is this not the problem?

You cannot format the 16GB card with FAT.

If the SD card size is greater than 2GB , it will have to be FAT32 or NTFS. etc. But for the phone it has to be FAT32.

So if you were to format the card in the PC, you should use, FAT32, You can use the default allocation size.

If you want to use the phone to format the card, you can go to the settings menu ---> Storage ---> Unmount SD card --> Erase SD Card

I've already tried formating with my phone and my PC but still have the same problems..

Hmmm.It must be frustrating.

Not sure if you have done a factory reset to see if that helps.

If that does not help, then can you also try to perform a software/firmware repair using PC Companion

The repair option on PC Companion (Support Zone --> Update --> Repair).

I did as you suggested and no luck Slightly_frowning_Face thank you for your help though!

Hmm. Sorry to hear that.

I know you said that you do not think it is the SD card, but are you able to try another 16GB SD card.

If the 2GB SD card works than the phone in theory should not have a problem reading a SD card up to 16GB.

Can't think of anything else.

Have you tried copying the files fromt he PC to the micro SD card using the USB card adapter that came wiht the phone?  Do this, remove the card adapter from the PC, wait a few seconds, plug it again and see if the PC reads all the files... Winking_Face

Hi, I am having the exact same problem with my micro sd card. I am aware of what may have damaged it in the first place and I know its definitely the SD Card that needs repairing/ formatting. My Samsung Galaxy S3 prompts the SD Card is damaged and won't even read it. Thus I don't see the option to erase all data through my cell phone. I inserted the SD card in my windows laptop and it won't format it. Says windows was unable to format. I tried to delete all the files on the SD Card through my computer. It acts as if it deletes them but when I click on the file to make sure it erased, it's still there. I was given the option to format on the cell phone but when I click on the "format" option. It won't do absolutely anything. Now I just want to erase the entire card. I was able to save all my files on my laptop. I just need help to erase and format. Tried something called SD formatter. That didn't even open.
