1).Go to settings>>apps>>all>>smart connect and clear data, restart your phone.
2).Do a factory reset to your phone.
Have you tried using different earphones ?? if it is doing same then problem might be with the phone , last what you can do is restoring the phone (will erase everything, make sure you have back up)
if worked then its problem with the earphone of yours

I have the same problem. My headphones worked perfectly until I installed 4.3 update.
None of the solutions with reseting or cleaning smartconnect data work. Headphones work only if I plug&unplug the jack several times.
I checked the 3.5 socket, it's clean and when start to work, there is no problem like when the socket is dirty/broken.
I'll try to downgrade the system, 4.3 hangs the phone and caused lots of problems with the graphics, icons and overall performance. In general, I'm dissapointed with the update.
