Power button not working

I bought my Xperia L a month back.

Everything was working fine, until recently when my phone goes into standby mode,the power button doesn't respond.

I need to remove my battery and switch it on again.

What do I do?

Press and hold Power & volume up for 5 seconds

As the button is responding when you power it on I am inclined to believe this is more of a software problem than hardware. With this being the case please attempt a firmware repair on your phone as per the below steps:

1. Download the PC Companion software from http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
and install it on your PC.
2. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.
3. Phone Software Update.
4. Start.
5. Repair Phone
6. Continue
7. Accept data removal
8. Next
9. Wait for prepare
10. Select Phone
11. Follow the connection steps
