Phone keeps turning off.. Very disappointed

I've had my sony ericsson for just on a year now. When i first got it, was fantastic!! In the past month if I browse facebook or just use my phone, it turns itself off. I took it back into optus shop and they sent it away to be fixed. They sent it back saying that its out of manufacturers waranty and that its just wear and tear.. I've got to say I'm very disappointed in Sony. I have a two year contract with Optus and I dont even have a working phone for the whole two years?! Not Happy Jan.. Has anyone else had the same problem??

While I am complaining, I am really ticked that my battery doesn't even last 4 hours any longer without having to charge it up.  I even turn off wifi and bluetooth, which I find a ridiculous solution since that is what I need in a phone.

Hi Stonebuilder, can you tell us a few more things about your phone? ie which operating system you are running, of any task killers or battery monitor apps you have installed, if you have already used the "repair method" or even reset your phone?

The fact that the battery is hot of course means that either the battery is defective (possible but unlikely) or an app is draining it to death. Or worse case scenario... the infamous motherboard failure.

Depending the condition of your battery, having all the antennas on and working at all times, an hour of phone calls and moderate Internet and audio/video usage, 4 hours of battery life is what you should expect from a 2 year smart phone...

What worries me though is the SIM error you are getting. Please provide some more info on your phone and if the problem is not hardware related you are going to find answers here soon.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have Model Number X10a

Android Version 2.3.3

Baseband Version 2.1.71

Kernel Version 2.6.29-00054-g5f01537

Build Number 3.0.1.G.0.75

I am not running any task killers, as I read that Android is supposed to handle the task better after version 2.2.  I am running TempMonitor Lite to monitor the Battery Temp.  I just installed this last week to monitor for a while.  The Phone Shutdowns were happening well before I install that app.  I have used the repair method but I haven't reset the phone to factory settings.  I was planning on doing that with one of the phones.  In terms of the battery life, I can accept that it is an older battery and even though they say these batteries don't have a memory, I understand that they will not work as well after a couple of years.  That being said, if a new battery would solve the issue, I would make a purchase right now.

The issue that really concerns me is the phone shutting down randomly.  I haven't noticed it while I was on a phone call, but it seems to happen a lot while going of Facebook, using Google Maps with GPS or browseing the internet.  I also have noticed it while trying to listen to music.

Like I mentioned it will shut down, and then when it turns back on it I will swipe to unlock it and then in the top notification bar it will look as if it is going into airplane mode, say that the SIMM Card is unavailable and then turn off.  Both phones do this.

There is also a message that displays as it is turning off.  It is in the middle of the screen and says something about Power off,  Shutting down because of system error (or something like that.    I can't remember exactly off the top of my head.)  Next time it happens I will try to remember to log on...

Since you flashed your GB the first time I suggest you spend a little time to back up your phone carefully and reflash GB. I dont know how but it seems like something got corrupted. Make sure you back up your SD card also. Uli has posted multiple times info on how to properly back up your phone give it a look. Do you use XRecovery?

Also very disappointed.

My Xperia X10 also does this.  Exactly the same with the shutting down, not recognising the SD or SIM cards randomly.  Now I have it plugged into my laptop to sync my contacts using Sony's PC Companion, and I can't get the thing to stay turned on long enough to move the contacts file! I'll move them using a card reader instead (I luckily managed to backup my contacts onto an SD card before the phone gave up!).  Now though, connected to the laptop, the phone is just switching itself on and off repeatedly.  I give up and have decided to try an iPhone as of tomorrow. Bye bye Sony!

My Sony xperia shuts off no matter what I do. Sometimes it will sit and restart over and over and over until the battery dies. This is my second xperia. The first I was able to send back in before the warranty was up thankfully because eventually the phone did not start up at all. Its garbage. I will NEVER spend money on Sony again or reccomend a Sony product because this happens every time.
