pc companion and update service are not working...help?

I have a sony xperia X10.  I want to update my phone because I think it will run better, so I have downloaded the PC companion, and it will not work for me.  It keeps running me in a circle.  it will go from the part where you have to turn your phone off  and plug it in to the computer, then it will go to the part where you have to mount it.  After you mount it goes back to the part where you have to turn your phone off and connect it to the computer.

I found a link for the update service...http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/  in other disscussion, so I downloaded that and tried it, but it is doing the same thing as the companion. 

All I want to do is update my phone, but it won't let me   Does anyone have anything else I could try?  I would really appreciate the help.

Make sure that you press and hold the back button BEFORE you connect the USB cable

I tied the update service that you posted above, that didn't work either.  I did backup my phone, and I do not have 2.3.3.  I think I have 1.6, or whatever came with the phone originally.  I want to get 2.3.3.  I have been holding the back buttom before I connect the usb cable but still nothing. 

I think i have a lemon of a phone!

restart your PC -> press F8 -> safe mode -> turn off both firewall and antivirus -> run SUS -> repeat the process.

Can you elaborate what happen or do you get an error?

Hello,  Sorry I took so long to respond back, as I was writing a reply describing what happens, I tried it again and this time it worked.  I completely removed the update service and reinstalled it again and tried everything like before with the exception of turning off the firewall.  Thank you for all your help.  Maybe someday I can figure out how to update to 2.3.3 or 4.0
