Notification ring problem with new Xperia ZL

I have turned off the notification ring for emails but the phone occasionally rings just the same and not due to incoming emails.  What is the notification ring notifying other than emails?  How do I turn it off?  Thx ...

perhaps its the Gmail app as well just open the Gmail app > settings  >and disable the notifications

If you are getting nothing appearing in the notification bar when you get these notification tones, please check if NFC is turned on.

My Xperia Z won't ring when people call me, notification sounds for txt messages and e-mails are working fine but when someone calls the screen lights up but there's absolutely no ringtone which is very frustrating as I keep missing important calls. Can someone help please
