from my own tests i have found that u can only beam (send/recv) things like websites, contacts, youtube. sure the touch to beam appears... but did u notice the "Touch to beam" is white and not blue? From what i had observed white means something that will not successfully beam over, while blue means it would. And from what i tested, beaming a image from the Sony to the S3 will result in the S3 not showing anything, but if u try it the other way, the Sony phone will open up the Play Store... i tried with the gallery app and i think i can come to the conclusion that when the image is beamed from the S3 it includes an application "tag" along with it (which explains why browser pages, youtube vids, and contacts open up the respective apps). Since our Xperias no longer use the default android gallery3d app and uses sony's own proprietary app, when the image is beamed over it tries to open the gallery app which obviously doesn't exist and therefore opens up a Play Store link which obviously will point to another non-existent app.
That's just what i think.
On the other hand... NFC image transfer from a S3 to a blackberry and viceversa works without any issues...
