I suggest that you contact your network provider as they can bar the IMEI on there network, also I suggest contacting the local authorities in regards to the theft of the device.

In some cases this action can only be taken by the network provider if requested by local law enforcement. I would advise reporting the handset stolen and see what other action they can provide.

I suppose from the network operator's point of view, why should they bother as it could be another potential customer. Morally that is not a good. The network providers should assist.

Back to your question.

Unless you have installed some sort of tracking app that can wipe the phone data and lock it, I feel you have to consider your phone lost.

I know it is no consolation to you but I have installed an app called Norton Mobile Security that allows me to remotely locate, wipe and lock the phone if it is stolen. So if you decide to replace your phone, you could consider this app.

Unfortunately the Android based phones are still not as good in this aspect. Hopefully this aspect can be improved.

For example:

With Apple iPhones, if anyone steals the phone they generally can't just use the phone.

As far as I am aware, every iPhone needs to be activated. For that you need to have an iTunes account associated with it. Once remotely deactivated, the thief can't activate the phone as the activation is unique to the iTunes account owner.
