MHL connection lag

MHL connection lag

I bought a Rocketfish MHL adapter, hooking my Xperia ZL to my Panasonic Plasma TV.

I mainly wanted this to output games to my TV, however there is a brutal lag in the connection making games completely unplayable.  However, it is not just when running games, as it looks fine on the phone itself so I know it is not a performance problem.  Even just scrolling through apps and the OS it is noticeable.  Anyone else have this problem?  Or a solution?

I know Sony has recently released their own proprietary MHL adapter, but I hardly think that should be necessary for it to run properly.

I'm not sure but i think what you're seeing is something called input lag. All displays have a certain delay when displaying a picture. It takes a little while for your TV to process and display the signal that is sent from the phone. Many TVs have a so called gaming mode that you can switch to which reduces the input lag by reducing the processing done on the signal so see if your TV has such a mode.

I don't think it's related to the adapter as it should only let the signal through.

I know input lag is a common scapegoat in this situation. But Pannys generally have little input lag. I own one and there's no noticeable lag with ps3 games but using an MHL adapter in the same hdmi port creates a lag that makes games unplayable. The lag is not in the controller because using just the phone display it feels instantaneous. No Bluetooth issues. So the lag comes from the mhl adapter or the port on the phone. Is Sony still using outdated mhl 1.0 spec on these phones? I imagine 1080p will be laggy then.

Hey man I'm so glad you made this topic because I'm having the same issues here I also had an xperia ZL and it lags when I play SNES games off it through HDMI so stopped. Then I recently bought an xperia Z2 and decided to try it again and still the same results with SNES but if I play nes games it works! I've been reading online that its something to do with the 1080p and that it runs on 24mhz refresh rate or something idk I have an old pipeline mhl adapter then I recently bought a pure mhl cable which doesn't require an external power source but it didn't work it wouldn't show up on my 55" Vizio led 3d TV etc... I guess it ain't smart enough. So I took that back and bought the rocketfish adapter and I'm still with the same results. Somebody has to have an answer.

@jrucifer

as per my previous post,

http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z-ZL-ZR/working-MHL-TO-hdmi-cable-XPERIA-ZL-may-be-for-every-xp...

I have purchased a mhl cable below is the link.

http://www.ebay.in/itm/MHL-Micro-USB-to-HDMI-Cable-TV-Out-Adaptor-For-Sony-Xperia-Z1-ZR-SP-HTC-ONE-M...

I have played videos and other operations such as brwoing , opening pdf files etc.. haven't seen any lag. Did not played intensive games though (played chess).

Haven't seen any big lag but very slight lag while playing video.

Mine is xpeira ZL and connected to DELL S2240L HD monitor (which is not a TV).

one suggestion is, connect one end of micro usb to power cord and not to usb power sources like laptop/pc or TV/monitor USB for power source and give a try.

Your are corret proprietary MHL adapter is not required ( as both of us can able to view on big screen with other mhl cables) but its recommonded.

Too bad SlimPort is working much better. No (noticable) lag. I have Z1, original Sony MHL cable and Sony TV and the lag is too big to play games 😞 Looking for any solution will fix this.

The problem is when u connect the phone through mhl it is set to 1080p at 30hz which causes lag.
To resolve this u need to change to 720p at 60hz, to do this follow these steps-

Open the dialer on your device and enter *#*#7378423#*#* (Note: The numbers spell out SERVICE)
Select 'Service Tests'
Select 'TV-Out Tests'
Select 'Video format'
Choose '1280*720p * 60'
Unplug and re-insert the micro-USB cable connected to your Sony Xperia device

Great hint! Thx!

Is it permanent or you have to do it every time you reboot your phone?
