Can someone please explain how this Location based wi-fi works?
It uses the cell network to work out your approximate location then if you are not near to one of your saved wifi locations it turns wifi off to save battery power.
If I'm on saved network range will it automatically connect??
Yes it should do.
As I've observed its very slow in switching on when in saved network range.
