limiting notifications from gmail app

In my regular gmail account any messages that are promotional or social are put into their own separate folders, but in the app on my phone they all show up in my inbox which results in dozens of notifications each day. Is there any way I can change that?

First of all make sure that you have the latest update for the Gmail application from Google Play. 

If you have the latest update: open gmail > menu button > settings > press on your Gmail address > inbox categories > mark social and promotions. Close the app by using the recent app menu and you should have the categories in your inbox.
