internet and MMs settings when using prepaid SIM

So I've been traveling abroad recently, and using local or international pre-paid SIM cards with a data plan. Now what's supposed to happen is, you insert a new SIM and the phone applies or downloads new internet and MMS settings to get the data working. What happened in practice was that:

1. I had to download the Internet / MMs settings manually

2. In order to do this, I needed a Wifi Connection BEFORE I could use my phone's internet connection

Is that normal? A coworker used the same type of SIM card (at the same location (Beijing) with his phone (a Samsung) said he never had to do such a thing to get his sim card working. I seem to remember I did not have to manually download anything or connect to a wifi hotspot with my previous phone (also a Samsung).

@michael_gr

That's odd, you might want to send your feedback to Sony >>> Local support because you should be able to download the APN settings.

Hi @michael_gr,

Your device has pre-configured APN (Internet & MMS) settings for some operators which it attempts to fetch when it detects your SIM, but not all operators are included.

If your operator is not included, you can try to start an automatic configuration of the settings under:
- Settings > More > Internet settings.
You may also configure the APN manually by going to:
- Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names (APN) > +, enter the correct settings from your operator here.
