Increased data usage

Hi... I'm new to this site after switching to Xperia X Compact from iPhone.

I'm having an issue with significantly increased data usage which I think is due to my phone automatically switching to mobile data when wifi signal is weak (or very busy).  I can't be 100 % sure but the day I got the phone I'm almost certain it automatically switched from wifi to mobile data later in the day and then yesterday I had problems downloading some large files and then today received a notification that I had almost reached my data limit for the month so again, I'm thinking it has switched over by itself.

Is there a control to prevent the phone automatically switching to mobile data ?

Thanks

You can go to settings > data usage > and check what has been using up your data, keep in mind that MMS will go through data not WiFi

Hi thanks for the reply. . I have checked that and know what apps have used the data but I don't understand why, unless the phone has automatically switched from WiFi to mobile data due to the WiFi being slow. . So is there a setting where I can make sure that doesn't happen?

which app is causing this problem?

Google play store and Flickr were the apps with the biggest usage but I was downloading apps and photos so the amount of data is understandable. . The issue is that I switched mobile data off and was on WiFi but the WiFi was going slow so it seems that my phone switched mobile data back on and used that instead.

Just carried out a test to see if it did the same again, but it didn't so maybe I had left mobile data switched on at same time as WiFi.

You don't have to disable data while on WiFi, but indeed, if the WiFi connection is too weak it will switch back

 Hi @DeanB72,

Welcome to the community.

Under Settings > Wifi > 3 dots > Settings there is an option for "Auto network switch". This will automatically choose the best connection, either wifi or mobile data depending on which is stronger. Turn this off, and it will only use wifi if it is available, regardless of the quality of the connection.

Hi.... Thanks for that.  I had seen that option but I already had it deselected so I can only assume that it was my mistake all along in that I hadn't switched the mobile data off.

Thanks for all the replies
