I can't take/make a phone call unless I'm on speaker phone

I'm hoping someone can suggest a solution. My Xperia Z1 is great but for the last few months whenever I make or receive a call I can't hear anything unless I put it onto speaker phone. As soon as I do this everything is fine but at times I'd rather have a private conversation without the rest of the world hearing it.

Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

I will be upgrading to a Z5 compact shortly and intend to give my Z1 to my wife for her to use (is this just a case of her switching her sim card into my Z1 or is it more complicated than that?)

It sounds like the ear speaker might be broken. You could try to start the phone in safe mode to see if any 3rd party app is interfering but I'd say it's most likely a hardware issue.

I have a vodafone monthly contract - do you know if I took it into one of their shops if they'd be able to get it fixed for me?

I'd recommend you give your Local support a call, they should be able to help you out!
