cant change my setting from automatic to manual for choosing a network

Is or was your phone locked to a carrier/network branded?

not that i know of !

When you restart your phone do you see a network/carrier logo? or do you have any carrier/network logo? can you use any SIM card from different networks on your phone?

Any ideas as to how i can overcome this problem

No - there is no network carrier logo - my phone is normally used in South Africa and I am in Kenya at the moment.This is the irst time I have used this particular phone out of South Africa .I have never had a problem before with any of my other phones.

Is roaming on ? if it is turn it off and check again

When I check in System - About Phone - under Status it tells me under Roaming- not roaming and under Mobile network state- disconnected.

That's quite odd, but do turn off roaming and check again
