Help with SMS alerts on Android 4

Hi.

I was just curious to know if people are having the same issue as me with receiving SMS texts on their phone now they've updated to Android 4.

Basically, all I get is the tone to indicate I have a new text.  I get no other on-screen message or pop-up any more, no icon in the top notification bar, and no flashing green light, which means if I leave my phone out of ear-shot, say at work or whatever, I have no way of knowing I've actually received a text unless I fully unlock, go into "messages" and check my contacts list to see if I have any new messages which have popped up, which is ridiculous.

The 2nd thing is, why have Android programmed the phone so the first thing you see when you push power/home when the phone is asleep is the slider/password input screen instead of the old one that showed onscreen what calls/texts you've missed?  It's really annoying.

Finally, I tried to set the password to only come on after 10 minutes of non-use, but the password screen pops up instantly anyway, making this a pointless feature.

Is it just me?  Or are other having these issues?  I'd really appreciate a response.

Thanks.

Do you have any 3rd party messaging apps installed?

I know for instance that Handcent SMS can offer a pop-up option and also change the color of the notification LED.

I also know that the default apps' features can be put out of order if 3rd party apps are installed since they might override the stock stuff.

I'll forward the stuff on the lock screen design in terms of what's shown.

What password are we talking about here and were do you set the time out?

The time out found at Settings > Display > Screen time out - does not affect the screen pattern/screen password found at Settings > Location & security > Set up screen lock. This lock will kick in when you turn of the display.
